Saikyo Jump #2 – February 2022 – Jujutsu Kaisen Special Issue – Magazine Review

Last year I reviewed Saikyō Jump #5, which featured a B3-size poster of Akutami-sensei’s art focused on the special-grade sorcerers. This year, in celebration of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film, Shueisha outdid themselves with Saikyo Jump #2 (February 2022). I’ve never seen a Saikyo mag sell out this fast. Mine was the very last one available from my neighbourhood bookstore, which I consider to be somewhat of a miracle because up until now, there’s always a couple left for sale until the next edition comes along. Let’s see why this Feb ‘22 issue was such a hit!

Gorgeous Yuji Cover

It doesn’t show in the photo but the cover is not thin coated paper like the past Saikyo Jump mag. This special issue uses a cardboard-type paper, and it’s textured in places.

Saikyo Jump with Yuji on the cover

There’s Yuji on the spine. I like this look so much better than the old one which featured a Weekly Shonen Jump-style cover.

Raffle Draw with Towel Prize

If you’re into raffle draws then this issue has some really good ones. First up is a towel prize, where you can choose amongst Kimetsu no Yaiba, Dragon Ball and JJK towels. To enter the draw, you need to cut out the enclosed coupon, paste it on a postcard and mail it to Shueisha by February 3, 2022.

Sorcery 101 Lesson with Satoru Gojo

Our favourite teacher takes us by the hand and teaches us the basics of sorcery in the JJK universe.

Hello, Sensei!

It’s all old stuff for most fans, but those who haven’t taken much interest before or have returned to JJK after a hiatus may find the content a great summary.

Introducing the story

In this section, Gojo-sensei tells us what sorcery is like he did in the manga/anime. Then there are a couple of pages introducing the characters in the manga, classified by teams (students, staff, sorcerers, curses) where he makes one liner comments about them.

Introducing the students

Then there’s a list of terms, explaining the differences between cursed energy and cursed techniques, cursed spirits, domain expansion and so on.

All about curses

A blood-red spread maps all the events (arcs) in the manga involving mysterious cases of dead people. Places are Miyagi Prefecture, Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama. Morioka is mistakenly listed as a prefecture, but it’s a city in Iwate Prefecture (where Nobara comes from).

Raffle Draw with JJK Merch Prize of Your Choice

While I don’t really care about the towel prize mentioned above, I do want to win this raffle real bad! Prizes include Jujutsu Kaisen Key Animation Vol2 (I reviewed Vol1 here), Pop Up parade figure of Yuji, 500-pcs jigsaw puzzle, and TakaraTomy DataFig chibi figures, buddy battle sets and Crush Stadium set.

Prizes galore!

Then there are Sofbee and Cutoco figurines, as well as lip balm, acrylic stand figures and plushies. I totally want the Key Animation V2 book! *Sigh* I never win in raffle draws, though, even if I keep sending postcards. It’s frustrating! Let’s hope this year’s when everything changes, ahaha!

Jujutsu Card Game

Here’s a fun card game! You’ll have to cut out the cards yourself, though. Thankfully, they’re made of proper card stock so are actually ones you can shuffle and toss about.

If you’re interested to know how it’s played, let me know in the comment section below!

B3 Double-Sided Poster

Perhaps my main reason for buying this mag (apart from the Yuji cover – I collect mags with JJK covers) is this gorgeous B3-size poster.

Our two main protagonists – past and present

One side features Yuji Itadori and Yuta Okkotsu, while on the other there’s Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. I really love how their names rhyme, and have the same initials and number of syllables! Ah, they were supposed to be together forever! Be still, my BL heart!

Most dangerous!

I promptly framed this one and hung it on a wall. This poster rocks! I think this supplement alone makes the mag worth every yen.

Framed and ready to hang!

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie Characters Sticker Sheet

Here’s a cute-ass sheet of stickers, featuring the JJK 0 movie main characters with their older-younger selves.

How pretty is Maki? I adore her faces here!

Other Content

There are non-JJK content, of course, including:

  • Lead-Off – Kimetsu Gakuen
  • Trading Cards – DQ Dai no Daibokuen x Blade and Yu-gi-oh/Rush Duel

See the entire list on the official Saikyo Jump page.

Purchasing Saikyo Jump #2

Because this issue sold out fast both online and offline, buying options are limited. There are resellers on Amazon, of course, but I’d check out the online flea markets and specialty stores first. Here are some listings:

Important Note: Be careful when buying at the flea markets. Not all sellers offer the entire magazine even if they show the front cover in their pictures. Some cut out the JJK portions and sell the parts as a set, while some remove the poster+sticker supplements and sell only the magazine itself. Always read the descriptions carefully.
