Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie is right on track in becoming one of the best-selling anime films of all time in Japan. Now that a 4DX version will be shown starting February 5th, not to mention some new concession merch already available in the cinema stores, let’s take a look at what we got last month, December 2021!
I spend an inordinate amount of time apologising on this blog for being late to everything; unsurprisingly, this post is another one of those times when I am late to everything. Not in attending the event itself, but in posting about it. But since no one’s actually complaining (because my JJK posts aren’t being read by anyone), I’ll just cut the apology short, ahaha!
Anyway, moving on. I did go to the movie theatre on December 24th, 2021, which is the same day as when Suguru Geto orchestrated his Battle of Shinjuku. Let’s have a look:
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Seatmate Blues
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie totally deserves a viewing on an IMAX screen! I loved every minute of the film, though I’m not a big fan of movie theatres because you could end up sitting next to someone noisy or distracting or just plain unpleasant.
Sadly, the girl next to me was one of those people – she arrived only minutes before the show and instead of taking the shorter end of the row to her middle seat, she forced everyone on the longer end to stand up so she could pass through. Then she sat down and began shoving handfuls of popcorn into her maw, chewing loudly. I wouldn’t have minded but she was wearing a bright white knitted sweater, which would flash whenever the film had a brightly lit scene. It was 7 AM and she ate like she was starving. The crunching noises and hand movement – she was using her right hand next to me instead of her left, where there was an empty seat – were rather distracting, ugh!
So I wasn’t altogether too happy with my seating situation, but all in all, I’ve had worse seatmates in my life (such as people who snore loudly throughout a film, or fight with their significant other, or ‘whisper’ loudly amongst themselves, or laugh intermittently while watching a sad movie, or spill their drinks, or clap during the most inappropriate times, and so on).
Worthy of Watching on an IMAX Screen
Whatever bad manners the audience had, the magnificent film more than made up for it. On the big screen, the action scenes were powerful and immersive in their execution. I was awed once more by MAPPA’s excellent cinematography and music score. They used every asset in their character library to fill the gaps in the manga and flesh out the characters as much as time allowed.
You could feel the fans in the audience brimming with excitement each time a beloved character made a surprise appearance, or when there were additional scenes not found in the original book. Every one of the characters were in their finest form, and you could really see how much Director Park and team love the story and source material while coming up with their own thoughtful, anime-only additions. I was, on the whole, thoroughly impressed.
I knew at the end of the film – credits perfectly complemented by King Gnu’s beautiful songs (ending song ‘Sakayume’ being far superior than the opening ‘Ichizu’, methinks) – that I’d be seeing the movie a couple more times. Hopefully it’ll be an emptier theatre next time, so less distractions.
Okay then, now that my thoughts on the movie are out of the way, let’s look at the concession stand merch! I love concession stands – they’re half of what makes theatre-going a fun experience.
TOHO Cinemas – Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Coaster
Order an extra large Coke and get a plastic coaster, is TOHO Cinemas’ one concession. The material is quite thin! I won’t be using it as a coaster IRL, though! This one goes straight to my coaster collection binder 😀
United/109 Cinema – Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Drink with Topper Figure
From United/109 Cinema is a Jujutsu Kaisen drink set. This tumbler-looking thingy looks really adorable, but actually a major disappointment. I was expecting a reusable cup – something to fill up while watching movies at home, wash, and then use again – but it’s actually just a regular paper cup.
For decorative use only, obviously! The actual cup with the drink was handed to me separately. I’ll reuse the figure-decorated lid as it should fit into one of my own drinking glasses at home.
There were four topper figures to choose from: Maki Zen’in, Toge Inumaki, Panda and Yuta Okkotsu. All of them were cute beyond belief, but I picked Maki because I love her. The little figure comes with a stand so you can remove it from the lid and display it on its own.
From February 5th, the choices will be Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. I wish I had the money to buy all of them! But for a paper cup they’re not exactly cheap (JPY 1200 for the cup, topper figure and an M-size drink of your choice). So I’ll have to pick one of them.
Aeon Cinema – Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Popcorn Bucket
I love this little Jujutsu Kaisen 0 popcorn bucket! It has the film promo illustrations on either side, and a two-tone purple lid. It was filled to the brim with popcorn, and you get to choose between salt or soy sauce + butter flavours. I wish caramel + cheese were amongst the choices!
Like the drink set, this one also costs JPY 1200. It comes with a keychain, randomly distributed. I got Geto but forgot to take a pic; will add it to his birthday collection next month!
The Jujutsu High emblem on the strap ends makes a great accent.
After eating up the popcorn, I washed the bucket so I could reuse it at home while watching films on the little screen. The strap is removable, which is convenient and thoughtful. What kind of crazy fan would throw away a cute bucket like this? No one, I hope!
Upcoming 4DX Version, Merch and Giveaways
The 4D/4DX screening as well as Dolby Cinema screening will begin on February 5th, 2022. Along with it are new concession stand merch (the Gojo and Geto topper figure drink sets, mentioned earlier, plus Rika’s figure), and new giveaways for filmgoers. I still haven’t reviewed the movie programme (called ‘pamphlet’ in Japan) or the first giveaway (JJK 0.5 booklet)… Ugh, sorry! Better get on with those as well, before I start buying the new stuff.
See you at the movies!
