Lately I’ve become a fan of the comedy anime 「吸血鬼すぐ死ぬ」(Kyūketsuki Sugu Shinu) or “The Vampire Dies in No Time.” It’s based on a gag and pun-filled manga about a weakling, Draluc the Vampire Lord, who partners with a kind-hearted but short-tempered vampire hunter named Ronald. They make a totally hilarious owarai kombi or comedic duo, and every episode is just rip-roaringly funny. I love the myriad characters, especially John the pet armadillo.
*I’ll be calling the anime ‘Sugu Shinu’ from here on, short for Kyūketsuki Sugu Shinu
Pic shows the manga’s first-ever cover on the weekly magazine ‘Shonen Champion,’ which I bought for the first time in my life! Inside there’s an Instagram-shaped plastic frame for decorating snaps. There’s also a limited-edition calendar on offer, available only to those who have the enclosed magazine voucher. Can’t wait for this one to arrive next year!

There have been a bunch of events and official merch but I came relatively late to the party and missed out on a lot of them. I did manage to go to one event on November 20th!
Sega Collabo Cafe Drink with Novelty Item
Sega has a collab (Nov 20 to Dec 5) with the Sugu Shinu anime – buy a drink at the stand and get a random coaster. Since I missed the other events I decided to go to the first day of this one, which happened to be a Saturday.

Saturdays in Akihabara are super crowded, and given the current pandemic I wasn’t too keen on jostling with the crowds. But a friend and I decided to make it to the Sega Collabo Cafe Stand early to avoid said crowd as much as possible. Even then, we had to wait in line for more than twenty minutes. There wasn’t much social distancing in the queue, either, so there I was grimacing and hoping that everyone – like me and my friend – had been fully vaccinated.

To be honest, I was rather happy to see the queue, which means there are plenty of fellow Sugu Shinu fans out there. The more fans, the merrier, not to mention better manga longevity due to popularity. Unfortunately, as I listened to people give their orders, almost all of the ones before us were ordering the LoveLive Superstar collab drinks xD

My friend ordered hot chocolate while I got a cup of hot black coffee. To my surprise, the cups had no logo on them whatsoever, just plain like the ones you get from the dollar store. Based on the posters, JPY 500 appears to be the cheapest collab (meaning plain cups), while JPY 700 gets you a cup with a character logo/stamp. Sugu Shinu was only doing the 5 dollar one, so no logos for us.
The coasters came wrapped in opaque silver foil, so we were excited to see what we’d end up with. I got Ronald and my friend, Hinaichi, which were what we both wanted! This made me very happy and put me in a good mood for the rest of the day 😀

While the cup was a disappointment, the coasters themselves were made of a nice, thick, sturdy kind of coated paper. Each of them featured four scenes from the anime. There are ten designs in all.
Inside the Game Center
Sega Building No. 4 in Akihabara is a game center, so while I’m no good at these crane/claw/UFO catcher games, we decided to check out all five floors to see what was on offer. Happily, Sega is currently doing a collab with Jujutsu Kaisen, so there were posters everywhere and lots and lots of JJK prizes.

My favourite part was a TV screen showing scenes from the Sugu Shinu anime, with a framed poster of JJK below. Two of my favourite anime shows in one room, how lovely! All the characters were simply adorable.

It wasn’t all games where you’re bound to lose money, though. There were also gatcha capsule toy machines , where you’re bound to get a prize for every play.

On the outdoor screen of the building they were showing clips from the anime, which was really fun to look at and reminded me just how hilarious the show is.

Here’s Ronald kneeing Draluc while they were at the bar-cum-hunters’ lodge, when he went up against a fellow hunter playing for ‘ownership’ of the adorable dies-in-no-time vampire.

And here’s the scene where Draluc appears at Ronald’s office for the first time, after his castle burned down.

Ronald takes out one of his tools, an anti-vampire spray bottle.

We then get to see what it says on the label: ‘Vavreze’ It’s a word play on a popular air and fabric freshener spray called ‘Febreze.’ Everything in KSS is turned into a V for vampire, for example:
- Prince Hotel becomes Vrince Hotel
- Family Mart convenience store, called Famima for short, becomes Vamima
This makes the naming very funny and a joke in itself. I laughed out loud when I saw this scene for the first time! 😀

Draluc is terrified of being sprayed, of course. Look at his poor face in this panel! Aww! xD
Purchasing Sega x The Vampire Dies in No Time Merch
If you’re in Japan, the collab is until November 5th, so there’s still time to go. Here’s a list of participating Sega stores around the country, from Sendai up north to Kumamoto down south.
If you live abroad, one way to get a hold of Sega collab merch is to buy from resellers. Here is Mercari’s Sega x Sugu Shinu listing. To get flea market stuff shipped worldwide, use a proxy such as From Japan. See my Shopper’s Guide for details.
That’s it for my review of the Sega x The Vampire Dies in No Time collab. Kyūketsuki Sugu Shinu is my comfort anime at the moment, so here’s hoping there’ll be many more collabs to come.
