Hōtō – Yamanashi Local Cuisine for Lunch

“I’m hungry,” Yuji said as the clock struck noon. 

One of the joys of traveling is sampling the local cuisine, and Yamanashi is known for a regional noodle dish called ‘hōtō.’ With dough prepared dumpling-style resulting in noodles thicker and chewier than regular udon, it is traditionally served with a miso-based soup and vegetables. A famous specialty restaurant chain, Kosaku, was established over 40 years ago and popular amongst both tourists and locals. That’s where the four headed for lunch that day. 

“We’re Number 36? On a weekday?” Nobara wailed as she jotted down their group name in a notebook at the reception counter. It was a Friday but the place was jam-packed with cars and loads of tourists. 

Knowing that with empty stomachs his mates could easily become ill-tempered, Megumi quickly made a smartphone search. “There’s a place called Hōtō Fudō down the road,” he suggested. 

They make their way there and are kept waiting for only about 10 minutes. Shaped to resemble a cloud, the building looked like a piece of modern art, its cave-like interior lit like a contemporary art gallery. 

“It’s nice, I like it,” Nobara looked around as they were seated, nodding in approval at her sea urchin-headed friend.

All of them order the restaurant’s specialty. Soon, chopsticks click and wooden spoons clunk as they dig in. It doesn’t show in the pictures but the steaming noodle pots were chock full of vegetables, enough to satisfy the growling stomachs of hungry teenagers. 

Gojo, fond of taking phone pics, tried to capture his three beloved pupils in a group shot, but Megumi won’t have it. “Please don’t photograph me while I’m eating,” he said somewhat curtly, so teacher only took pics of his two other grinning students.

Bellies warm and full from the delicious yet very affordable local cuisine, the four are energised, looking forward to the next spot in their travel itinerary.

じゅじゅトラベラーとほうとう

「腹減った」と虎杖がつぶやくお昼時。山梨なら当然、郷土料理「ほうとう」を食べなくちゃ！皆そう思い、人気の老舗ほうとう専門店「小作」へ。しかし、大変混んでおり、受付で代表名を書こうとするとなんと３６組目！「ええ、平日なのに〜」と野薔薇ちゃんががっかりした顔で言った。

お腹が空くと不機嫌になる仲間を見てあわててスマホ検索するめぐみん。「『名物ほうとう不動』なら近くにあるよ」と提案。あ、本当、近い。待つこと１０分で着席。現代アートのような雲形建物で洞窟のような不思議な空間。「素敵ね」と笑顔が戻った野薔薇ちゃん。全員がほうとうを頼み、美味しくすする。写真ではわかりづらいが、まぜるとどんどん具材が現れ、野菜たっぷり。お値段もとてもリーズナブルな絶品でした。

スマホ撮影が好きな五条先生は可愛い生徒たちを記念に撮ろうとするが、今度はめぐみんが「食事中に撮らないでください」と拒否。なので明るくピースサインする悠仁くんと野薔薇ちゃんだけをパシャ。みんながお腹いっぱいになり、次の目的地に向かって元気をもらいました。
