Jujutsu Kaisen Merchandise – Satoru Gojo Figure – Game Center Prize by Taito – Product Review

Finally I get to welcome this Satoru Gojo figure by Taito! I’ve no bragging rights whatsoever with this one, though. After my failed attempt to get the Yuji Itadori figures at the game center, I wised up and got this Gojo one via auction.

Winning the Bidding War

YAHOO! Auction is the most popular auction site in Japan; it’s our version of ebay. (In case you were wondering, unlike in the US the YAHOO! brand flourished in Japan and is now a dominant service provider owned by Softbank/Z Holdings.) I had a big coupon there so I was able to get it for less than what it was selling at the specialty shops.

A game center machine with the D-ring type crane game. Had trouble with this one previously so didn’t touch it!

It was a great deal overall, although that really depends on one’s perspective regarding game center prizes. There was a girl on Instagram who said she won hers after 15 plays (meaning that – at JPY 100 per play – she used up JPY 1500, around 15 USD), and then a guy who said it took him 30 tries. Then there was a girl who didn’t say how much she spent overall, but put in lots of crying emoji saying she spent a whole lot trying and failing, before finally asking a game center staff to help her out. He taught her how to play the right way, and she did eventually win the prize for herself, but not without being told that for most people it takes half the amount she used for them to win. Aaargh! He had to twist the knife now, didn’t he? xD

This one is the drop-the-ball type of crane game, where you position the ball in such a way that it drops and hits the plate where the figure is on. Looks easy but isn’t, because the crane arms are so weak it’s nearly impossible to move the ball.

Needless to say, there were a bunch of Instagrammers boasting it only took them two tries to win the figure. That’s merely around 2 USD! If it’s true, wow, I’m truly impressed! Wish I had their crane game skillz! xD

Box shown on all sides. The pictures are lighted well so they have a nice, realistic-looking skin tone.

Me being hopeless at the game center, I didn’t take any chances and went the auction route. I’m very happy with how things turned out. I’ve run out of big coupons as a result, however, so when the Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki figures come out either I win them myself or just pray there’s some nice person out there willing to auction their prize at a reasonable price xD.

Satoru Gojo Figure by Taito

Alright, now that I’ve told you how I got the figure, let’s have a look at it:

Unwrapping the figure. It’s well-packed so nothing moves even when the box drops to the bottom of the machine.

Gojo’s head is small! I was photographing with my old iPhone from above so it doesn’t look that tiny in the pics, but it’s actually pretty smallish. Sorry about the bad lighting. The face looks exactly like the face in the box: very, very youthful looking. It’s hard to believe he’s twenty-eight years old! Take ten years off of that, I must say.

The face looks unbelievably young, but so do the manga and anime versions. This guy is ageless and this figure captures that agelessness perfectly.

His hair is off-white with very light lavender gradation at the ends. Six Eyes is famous for his baby blues, as we all know, and they’re as blue here in the figure as a cloudless sky on a cool Spring day.

A front view. Sorry for the ugly greenish lighting. The figure is about 20cm tall, with a 1cm base around 12.5cm in diameter.

The uniform is a navy blue so deep it’s almost black. I think the swirl decoration on the base represents his domain expansion technique.

Jujutsu Kaisen has very plain uniforms compared to the many other anime/manga out there where the costumes are so flamboyant they won’t look out of place in a carnival parade. There’s a fussy part of me that wants to add a cape or a sash or a hat or something, anything at all to make the simple figure look fancier, ahaha! But so far I’ve kept my hands off these Jujutsu Kaisen figures. Maybe that’s really what makes them special – they wear the plainest, most boring clothes but make up for it with their wildly interesting personalities 🙂

Pose and Personality

I’m not really sure what to feel about the pose. Unlike the Itadori action-packed figures I wrote about the other day, Gojo is just standing in this one, cool and straight as a cucumber, with two fingers entwined preparing to launch his curse technique.

Looking to the right. The figure is well-made, although less hefty than the Itadori version.

My favourite Gojo is the one who fought Ryomen Sukuna when he first appeared in the manga/anime, right after Itadori ate the finger Fushiguro had been searching for. I loved Gojo bending his knees and stretching, preparing for a fight. Then there’s the Gojo who high-kicked Jogo when the special-grade cursed spirit attacked him on his way to see Principal Yaga, just after he told Ijichi to drive off by himself. So we’ve seen Six Eyes in action, and we know he’s fast and he moves well, better than anyone else in fact.

Back view. There are so few colours needed for this figure I feel the manufacturers have saved a lot in the paint department.

Yet here he is in this figure, just standing, just chilling. Aaah. It’s so Satoru Gojo – this being all super cool and only needing to move his fingers to break apart the earth as we know it – but I’m wishing he’d be in some sort of dynamic pose.

Well, maybe that’s why I feel I still don’t get Satoru Gojo. I love him, I adore him, but I don’t get him. His perfection is beyond my comprehension, is what I feel. Imagine being so utterly perfect in every single way that all you need to do is stand there and the entire world will gladly worship at your feet.

Looking to the left. At least he’s bending his knee a little so it’s not a straight-up stiff pose.

That’s being unfair to him, though. Gojo has plenty of enemies, and he does have a huge, indescribable weakness. This flaw is in the form of a person, one particular person he loved with all his heart but ended up being betrayed by. So Gojo is indeed blindingly perfect, yet human enough to be (just barely) relatable. He has this disarming quirkiness and talkativeness that we find so utterly charming. And we all know that while he does indeed seemingly have everything, he lost the one person in the world that meant everything to him. He’s tortured but would rather burn in hell that let it show. It’s a great albeit delicate balancing act. Only a heartless person would hate on Satoru Gojo.

And that’s why, unlike everyone else, he can just stand there and flick his fingers, and we are down on our knees offering him our hearts and minds and souls… and maybe even more, ahaha!

Ah, Satoru Gojo. Good to have you here, not trapped inside the Prison Realm but just standing there, doing your thing. Carry on, Sensei, carry on.
