Have you ever wanted a particular pack of chocolate chip cookies so bad that you fight back tears when you find they’re no longer available?
It happened to me, when the Lawson chain of convenience stores collaborated with the Jujutsu Kaisen team to sell a popular brand of cookies called Country Ma’am, as well as cocoa drinks with original art. The campaign started on March 3, 2021 and I was able to get my lazy ass to the stores on the 4th. Guess what? Not a single one of them left. Altogether I went to about eight stores that were a walking distance from where I lived but…Not. A. Single. One. Left.
FamilyMart x Jujutsu Kaisen Collaboration
This time around, with a different chain, FamilyMart, I made sure to go the same damn day the campaign started. That day is today, March 15, 2021. Click here to have a look at the different giveaways available.
- From March 15* – plastic sleeves
- From March 23* – pinback buttons with chibi versions of the characters
- From March 30* – pinback buttons with the characters’ anime versions
*with an ‘offer good while supplies last’ clause
FamilyMart’s collaboration with the Jujutsu Kaisen team consists of fans buying designated products and receiving a giveaway for every three pieces purchased.
I got around to chatting with one of the store staff, who was super friendly.
“You really like Jujutsu Kaisen, don’t you?” he noted as he rang up my purchases.
“Yeah, it’s the best anime out there right now! Have you seen it?”
“No, but I hear about it a lot,” he said with a laugh.
“Well, you should watch, it’s amazing! Highly recommended!”
“I will,” he replied, gamely.
“So happy to get one of each design!” I grinned at him through my face mask.
“Good thing you came early this morning. These campaigns sell out real fast and are usually over by the end of the day,” he said.
Well, I thought to myself, I learnt my lesson with the cookie debacle. “I’ll make sure to come again early on the 23rd!” declared moi.
I asked him if I could take a pic of the shelf with the goodies in it to show on my blog, and he kindly said yes. Here it is:
Great, eh? The best thing about this store is that they let you choose which sleeve you like. For four sleeves you have to buy a total of twelve products, mostly candies and chocolates and the like.
Thinking of becoming Mahito-level evil and buying up all the Satoru Gojo sleeves in order to trade online for other goodies with fellow fans (including the chocolate chip cookies I missed earlier!), the Kasumi Miwa angel on my shoulder pinched my ear and told me not to be a dick. So I only bought one of each. It was around 7:30 in the morning, and there were still a few Gojo folders left. A miracle, if you ask me!
A Look at the Newest File Folders
I made it back home in time for my 8:00 online meeting, where I sat in front of my computer grinning like Aoi Todo whenever he saw his ‘brother’ Itadori do something cool. “A full night’s sleep?” my boss asked. “No, but I had a good jog this morning,” was my evasive reply. I think I grinned all throughout the meeting and freaked out my colleagues, ahaha!
Sooooo, here we are:
Super cute, doncha think? Megumi Fushiguro is holding a cup of coffee (or maybe tea or chocolate) and looking totally unimpressed, as always. Yuji Itadori is his usual sweet self, making a victory sign as he holds a nikuman (steamed meat bun). Nobara Kugisaki is blushing while she eats a hotdog-on-a-stick. Satoru Gojo is grinning and taking a selfie, with a chocolate eclair in one hand.
The images on the back are the same: the four taking a selfie together but with different color backgrounds:
Ugh, they’re too adorable! I really hope they’ll add the other characters as well, in the near future. I mean, Maki Zenin would look incredible in this series, wouldn’t you agree?
Chocolates and Candies and Udon Oh My!
Here are all the junk food I purchased just to get the sleeves. Anything look familiar? Nearly all of them are very popular products costing a dollar each or thereabouts.
Amongst them is a Bandai product called 発掘恐竜 Hakkutsu Kyoryu (“Excavating Dinosaurs”), a dino-shaped chocolate that you can pop out of its mold. It’s the one on top of the Kugisaki sleeve. There are eight types of dinos in all, but I still haven’t opened it so I don’t know which one I got. If you cut out part of the tray the mold comes in and send it to the designated place, they’ll send you a secret treasure. I wonder what that is? xD Should I mail it in? xD Oh, now that I mentioned this, there’s also a fish version (the one one top of Fushiguro’s sleeve).
The rest are stuff you can eat while working from home. There’s a box of Lotte almond chocolates, two packs of Meiji galbo chocolates, one UHA gummy bear and two Meiji ones (one of them with a funny name, Poifull), then two boxes of Meiji lemon and yoghurt candies.
My fav is the GABA one from Glico (in the red package above Itadori’s folder), which touts itself as ‘mental balance chocolate.’ It’s supposed to offer stress relief from deskwork 🙂 Dunno about its effectiveness, but I sometimes eat it for the placebo effect xD
What should I do with the rest of the junk food? Well, Wednesday is go-to-the-office-as-in-ride-the-train-go day for me so I’ll put the sweet ones in our office candy jar.
The instant kitsune udon I’ll eat for dinner 😀 It’s the on the upper left hand side of the photo, heaven knows why I picked it xD
All of the above products would be cheaper when bought at a regular grocery store or supermarket or discount shop, but those places hardly run tie-up campaigns so it’s the convenience store or bust.
Raffle Draw Prizes
I was so pleased with my new folders I forgot to ask the store staff to ring up my purchase into 500 JPY groups so I could get more receipts. For any 500 JPY+ (about 5 USD) receipt containing at least one of the specified products, you can enter a raffle draw for a chance to win:
- a B2 tapestry of the four together, or
- a cotton shopping bag with four acrylic charms
The former requires two receipts to enter, while the latter only requires one, and is open until April 16. You can download the form to join here.
Only 50 of each of these prizes will be awarded, and with millions of entries from all over the country, what are my chances? I need a 術式 (jutsushiki or technique) for winning raffle draws! Gotta cast a spell or something xD
I’ll join just for the sake of it, though. Let’s hope it’ll give me something new to write about in May! Best of luck to me and you!
