【閲覧注意】漫画148話ネタバレ WARNING: Contains Ch148 manga spoilers
My oh my, from the early chapters I’ve been dreaming of reading more about the Zen’in family and seeing Maki claim the throne for herself as the story progresses. As of Chapter 148, however, she’s decided to respect Naobito’s final wish and scolds the extremely reluctant Megumi Fushiguro into accepting his fate as the head of the Zen’in clan.
You Too, Brutus?
There’s just no way the rest of the family will accept the outcast Toji’s son as their superior. So they plot to kill Fushiguro, and his two cousins in the process: Maki and Mai, the twins born with no or very little innate sorcery.
We find out just how badly Maki is being treated within her own family. First Naoya (Naobito’s son) tells her her one saving grace – her beautiful face – is ruined and no one will want her anymore. He insults her, calls her names, and we also see a flashback of him bullying her when she was still a child. Maki ignores him, and also ignores her own mother’s warning not to enter the weapons stockroom.
When she does enter the stockroom, her very own father, Ougi Zen’in, is waiting inside to kill her. He has already almost killed his other daughter, Mai.
The Zen’in Family Tree
Let’s figure out the family tree first. At the head of the household was 直毘人 Naobito, who died from fatal injuries incurred during the Shibuya incident. He is the middle child, and has an older brother (not named) and a younger brother, 扇 Ougi. His older brother’s sons are 甚壱 Jin’ichi and 甚爾 Tōji. Toji’s son, as we all know, is Megumi Fushiguro.
From this tree we know that Megumi Fushiguro and the twin girls, Maki and Mai, are cousins. Naoya, the guy who tells Maki she’s become ugly, is also their cousin. As Naobito’s son, Naoya feels he should be the heir, although as we see above, Megumi Fushiguro also has a claim to the throne by birthright. That is, his father is the son of the eldest son.
Naobito’s younger brother, Ougi, felt that he should have become the head of the household instead of Naobito. He blames his twin daughters’ lack of innate jujutsu sorcery as the reason why he wasn’t chosen as head. In other words, he blames his being a failure on his children.
Needless to say, he’s an asshole if ever there was one.
In order to increase his standing in the jujutsu pyramid of sorcerers, Ougi plots with his nephews, Jin’ichi and Naoya, to kill Megumi and the twin girls.
Wow. I love this kind of drama.
Reluctant Heir
The Zen’in family is like the Godfather films’ Corleone family in the Jujutsu Kaisen world – relatives at each other’s throats, prepared to eliminate one or the other to get what they want. Apparently, becoming head of the family is a very Big Deal. There’s money involved, there’s prestige, there’s property.
Megumi, however, doesn’t want any of this. He’s considered himself lucky – unlike Maki and Noritoshi Kamo (the Kyoto student, not the zombie in Geto’s body) – that he doesn’t have to bear the burden of carrying the family name. Well, turns out he does. Maki doesn’t feel she’s ready to become the head as she is still not strong enough. Then there’s that thing with her sister and rival Mai. Megumi relents, but as we’ve seen in this chapter, their relatives won’t have it.
End of the Line for Maki?
The chapter ends with Maki fighting for her life. It’s a kill-or-be-killed situation. Will she survive? Will she have the guts to kill her own father?
As a plot I love complicated, infighting families and intra-familial plotting and revenge and retribution, but if Maki doesn’t make it then the manga will lose one of its most compelling characters. For me, at least.
Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t have a female equivalent to Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer in the world. I held hopes that Yuki Tsukumo’s character will be developed, but we saw in the previous Chapter 147 that she’s been relegated to play bodyguard to Tengen. While Maki may not have any inborn sorcery abilities, she has the strength of will and the potential to become a big player. That’s what I’ve been hoping to happen. Unfortunately, she may just be killed off any minute, breaking my heart.
Junk Food Junkie
According to the Jujutsu Kaisen official fanbook, the Zen’in twins are into junk food.
Here’s me trying to give Maki energy via the food she likes:
Isn’t she adorable? The miniature foods are actually erasers from the Daiso dollar store. They come in all kinds of shapes and I’ve a small collection. Who doesn’t want mini food-shaped eraser? Not me! Gimme one of each of all the eraser foods in the world, ahaha!
Here’s the behind the scenes:
As you can see, the erasers are actually very small compared to the Maki Zen’in plushie. I love that with the right camera angle the food appears to look somewhat proportionate to the doll.
Let’s have a look at the ‘food’. Here they are in their original packaging:
We have a bag of potato chips, a tub of popcorn, a tube of octopus-flavoured chips. Then there’s a ham sandwich, a hotdog-on-a-bun, and a whole pizza. Yum!
I used to have a junk food habit as a student. Wait, that’s not entirely accurate. I still have a junk food semi-habit even though I’m no longer a student. I still crave junk food sometimes, though not as badly as I did when I was a teenager.
In the end, due to Instagram grid considerations I went with the grey brick wall for background on social media, but I also took one with a red brick wall.
Which do you like better?
That’s it for this manga meta slash Chapter 148 review slash merch info. My wish is for Maki not to die. I want her and Fushiguro to reset the entire sorcery world along with Gojo and Kyoto student Kamo, in the end. I’m pretty sure one or two or even more of them will die in the end, but that won’t stop me from wishing otherwise.
Dear Maki, never retreat, never surrender!
What about you, what did you think of Chapter 148? For those who haven’t read it yet, do you like Maki Zen’in all the same, and also my food-shaped erasers?

Thank you so much for reading! Please take a moment to share a thought or two in the comment section below. Your comments give me life and are a real source of encouragement. xoxo – hana
zenin clan is like the lannisters of jjk hope someone comes to help maki n mai like panda or megumi or someone anyone dont want her to die either too early i agree
Ah, them Lannisters! The one ‘good’ person amongst them was Tyrion so I guess that would be Megumi in JJK xD
I feel that Akutami is looking for a character to kill off and he has cast his eye upon my precious Maki. Noooooo! Let’s hope I’m dead wrong. I’m dreaming of a scenario where, when push really comes to shove, both the twins finally release their innate sorcery (like it was inside them all along but it takes only a life or death situation to make it appear, unlike other sorcerers’ powers that become obvious by the time they are 5 or 6). I really, really wish for a story where Maki rises to rule the Zen’in clan at the very end of days.
luv ur eraser food btw would love a yuji version of him watching films at home n snacking also nobara eating macarons or something thatd be cute
Aww, thanks! That’s a great idea re: Yuji. I don’t think I have a mini TV set but there should be one in the dollar store xD As for the junk food, I’ve plenty of junk food-shaped erasers already xD Macaron for Nobara – another great idea! I think I’ve only ice cream and cookies and cakes but no macaron. Next time I’m at the dollar store I’ll look for one. Wait… OMG Krissy you’re a devilwoman, making me want to buy more erasers! xD
whats wrong with makis face whys there a deep wrinkle on it poor girl did u do it on purpose to make her look like she does after shibuya
Waaah, it’s really that bad, isn’t it? Unfortunately, it’s not intended – I did *not* want Maki to have that huge wrinkle. It’s all my fault, though, because I’m a cheapskate. Thing is, when you order online instead of buying from a physical store, there’s a 20% discount. So it’s cheaper to buy online, but the caveat is you don’t get to choose which doll to have. They sent me this one and now I have to live with it 🙁 I remember buying Geto from a Village Vanguard store and it took me maybe 10 minutes to choose which face to get! xD They all looked rather different, being handsewn and all. For the Maki plushie I should’ve given up on the discount and just buy from VV or Party Rico in my neighborhood.
eraser collection lol thats how it begins u buy a pack n before u know it u keep on buying until u have everything available lol always thought u were strong resisting buttons cards dolls n stuff but never knew ur weakness would be erasers lolol
IKR! I wasn’t even really aware I had a collection in the making. One day I realised, OMFG why do I have so many erasers? xD The marketers really got me this time around. It’s like whenever I go to the dollar store I’m not even aware that I end up in front of the eraser shelf picking out miniature food when really, I went there to buy something completely unrelated/practical/useful. You’re right about this ‘collection curse’, though. Once you’re bitten by it you begin to want all the others to make a ‘set’. I need this want to be exorcised out of me! xD
Sorry, but since I haven’t finished the anime yet and I’m not up to date with the manga, I jumped straight to see Maki’s photos with those miniature erasers and they are so adorable <3 I wish I had a collection of food-shaped erasers, but here in Argentina I don’t see them anywhere 🙁 BTW, those erasers look so cute 🙂 I saw videos showing a lot of school supplies in Japan and I was fascinated! Here those kinds of things are so boring xD
Myri! So wonderful to see you here once again. How have you been? What’s the situation like over there? Are you back on campus already?
Thanks, I’m glad you like my erasers<3 The dollar store I frequent has an entire shelf of them at the entrance of the store, so they’re amongst the first things any customer will see xD Them marketers really know how to tempt people xD
A couple of years ago I spotted a pack of erasers shaped into three mini-cakes. They were super cute, so I told myself I’ll just buy that and nothing more. But lo and behold, each time I go to the dollar store I end up buying another pack. Apparently I have the taste of a six-year-old xD It’s crazy! Now I have dozens of silly little erasers in the shape of food: ramen, steak, ice cream, spaghetti, sushi, cookies, onigiri, bread, you name it. I can’t think of a dumber purchase! I mean, I do have regular erasers (the plain ones whose sole purpose is to erase pencil lines xD) so I really have no use for these. Because they’re cute and colourful I suppose their real purpose is to be collected/displayed or handled as toys. So now I have to find ways to photograph them otherwise they’re just shut inside a box being useless xD Expect to see more of my eraser collection in the future xD
Hana! I really missed being here 🙁 I’m fine luckily, I just have stress from college exams ?
I really don’t know how to explain the situation here xD At least where I am, social distancing is still applied, some social activities are limited to certain hours and children go to school in small groups.
And in my university there is no sign that we will return this semester or the next one so we only have to pray that by next year we can finally have face-to-face classes again ? I’m still staying at my parents’ house and I think I’ll go back to Córdoba after my birthday next month 🙂
How are you? How are things going in Tokyo?
I feel so bad for you and all the other university students in the world who don’t get to enjoy campus life. Spending time with classmates and senpai/kohai on campus as well as chatting with teachers/professors IRL is one of the highlights of the college experience, and I just feel really sorry that you couldn’t enjoy it 🙁
Tokyo is still in a state of emergency, so – in principle – no big events or parties or traveling and other stuff that make life bearable. Vaccine rollout here is going so slowly I totally doubt that my age group will get vaccinated within the year. Cases are also rising since Tokyoites are tired of staying at home and have gone to travel locally during the Golden Week vacation period 🙁 Now the places where they went (such as touristy Okinawa and Hokkaido) are seeing a rise in hospitalisations. It’s sad, really.
I’m trying to be a good, responsible citizen and following all the rules, though it’s somewhat tiring. But I know I shouldn’t complain because other countries have it so much worse. The Tokyo Olympics is a big issue right now. IOC insists it goes on while all polls so far have shown that the majority of the Japanese populace don’t want it to. While I enjoy watching sports, I sometimes feel the Olympics is all about the sponsors making money more than anything else.
